Where creativity meets community
The Studio is a residential learning community in Ogg Hall in the heart of the UW–Madison campus. We house over 60 student residents from all majors in a co-ed living environment. Our residents can take an exclusive 1-credit seminar each semester, led by our Faculty Director Helen Lee. We share our talents by collaborating and supporting each other in our creative practices. Residents participate in arts showcases, workshops, trips, community dinners, and more!

The Studio Seminar
Spring 2023 Seminar: The Studio Presents
Course: Integrated Arts 112
Day/Time/Location: Tuesdays, 5:30 – 7:00pm, The Studio Blackbox, Ogg Hall
Credits: 1
Instructor: Faculty Director Professor Helen Lee
Description: In Spring of 2023, The Studio Presents will look to the theme of Semiotics in exploring the use of icons, indexes, and symbols through a collaborative creative project. We will work hands-on in neon with Tom Zickuhr, with potential for interactivity via wearable/mobile neon and/or neon symbols that are responsive to sound or music. Guest artists will include writer, performer, and futurist Porsha Olayiwola and street artist and muralist Marka27. Exhibition visits will include work from Sanford Biggers and the MASK Consortium. Readings will include the graphic novel Unflattening, by Nick Sousanis. Students will spend the second half of the semester working towards a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative group project driven by student skills and interests. This work will be publicly shared with the larger UW-Madison community with ample support from The Studio.
