What the Studio Can Do

Hello all!

This blog post will be a little different than the normal topics – this week I’m taking the opportunity to talk about what the Studio has done for me in so many aspects of my life and time at UW–Madison.

As you all know, living in the Studio freshman year provides you with an abundant number of opportunities to learn and develop as a student, artist, and emerging member of society. For me, it was a year of experimentation and exploration of myself and my artistic pursuits (releasing music for the first time as Idiotkid), as well as building a community that I now know as my best friends, roommates, and collaborative partners.

Going from attending my first basement show in Madison, where I saw fellow Studio alum Bear in the Forest (Alberto Kanost) play an inspirationally fun set, to living with my best friends from the Studio and throwing our own house shows, music has presented itself as a common theme in my experience here – for that I can thank the Studio. The connections this place forms are more valuable than I think I could even conceptualize.

A poster for our most recent house show – featuring Deryk G, Godly the Ruler, and Severed at the Knee – all prior Studio Residents!

Being able to come back this year as the Studio’s LCPA has been an amazing opportunity, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you all and seeing you build those same connections. It is the coolest thing to be able to see your experience mirrored in the next group of Studio residents.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into why I love the Studio so much, it’s always fun to be able to reflect in such a positive way.

All the best!

Sam
