As part of Michele Byrd-McPhee’s Interdisciplinary Arts Residency, UW–Madison has the honor of sitting in on a conversation between Byrd-McPhee and renowned Philadelphia poet, Ursula Rucker.
Ursula Rucker is a Philadelphia born poet, mother, activist, and recording artist. She has been performing, recording, and releasing works for over 20 years. She has five solo recordings and collaborated on over 100 songs. Rucker has been awarded the Leeway Foundation’s Art for Change and Transformation Awards and a Pew Fellowship. She is the subject of the documentary short POET and continues to perform her first one-woman show and live memoir, My Father’s Daughter.
The October 26 talk is part of a larger series and program that occurs at UW. Michele Byrd-McPhee is this semester’s Interdisciplinary Artist-in-Residence, teaching the course “Hip-Hop Culture, Women & the World” where students examine the roots of Hip-Hop culture and its current place as a global phenomenon with a specific focus on the history, contributions, and experiences of women in Hip-Hop. If you are left wanting more, the conversation continues as Rucker “passes the mic” to former Artist-in-Residence Marc Bamuthi Joseph (spring 2007) during this year’s Passing the Mic Festival.
The 2020 Passing The Mic Festival is October 26-31. The Interdisciplinary Arts Residency event is one of several sessions scheduled for Tuesday, October 27. When registering on Eventbrite, select the Tuesday Registration option to register for this session.
